Drawing Machines

Drawing Machine and Experimentation

Plane

Experimenting with the plane

Tasked with finding a toy that would allow us to draw in a new way, I found this plane. By dipping the foam end of the nose in paint (or any other easily transferable medium), I can either throw the plane - aimed at the wall or dropped (nose-first) towards the ground. Both methods produced the same type of mark. However, letting the plane drop to the floor always produced a mark on the paper, when aiming towards the wall I found that anything - because the plane is so light-weight - could throw the plane off-course and either cause it to fall short of the wall or to veer off course and hit the wall instead of the paper on the wall. I also found that the type of mark varied based upon the viscosity of the paint. When thick, the action created a 'blob' of paint up to 4 mm thick, when water was added to the paint, the impact of the nose hitting the paper surface created a more splatter effect only 1 mm thick at most.
